Engineered wood flooring, as the name suggests, is a man-made product, albeit created from entirely natural ingredients. An amalgamation of plywood, upon which a solid oak lamella or top layer is added, engineered wood flooring looks just like real wood. One of the major benefits of engineered wood flooring is that it can be laid over under floor heating, which has become immensely in popularity in recent years. Furthermore, because engineered wood flooring doesn’t expand and contract to the same extent as solid wood, it is also suitable for installation in rooms where moisture and temperature fluctuations might be anticipated.

When choosing the thickness of your engineered wood flooring, you need to take into account your subfloor, your anticipated traffic and the life expectancy you have in mind for your floor. If you are laying engineered wood flooring in a room adjacent to another wood (or even tiled) floor, you should also try to select the thickness so that any differences in height of floor are minimal.

21/6 thick, engineered wood flooring is engineered wood flooring boards which are a total of 21mm thick, with a 6mm solid oak lamella or top layer. A thick board will give a solid and stable feel to your flooring project and a significant lamella or top layer will allow you to sand and re-finish your floor more often.

Generally speaking 21/6 thick, engineered wood flooring should be capable of being sanded up to 7 times in its lifetime, which means that choosing this option will give you a long-lasting flooring solution. That said, if you have under floor heating, 21/6 thick, engineered wood flooring is not normally recommended.
