Wooden Floor Care and Maintenance

Wooden flooring is a great way to enhance the look of your home or commercial property.  What’s more, with the right care and looking after, your high quality wooden floor could last a lifetime.  To maintain the fresh look of your floor and retain it’s protective coating, your wooden floor should be re-coated every couple of years.  This task is relatively easy to do and you can buy specific maintenance lacquers and oils for this purpose.  For any serious, long term or deep-down damage which your wood floor may have suffered, you might want to consider having your floor sanded and completely re-sealed.   All of that said, with the right day-to-day and week-to-week care and maintenance, your floor will stay looking great for longer between re-coats and re-seals.

Here are our Top Tips for the General Care and avoidance of damage to your wooden floor:

1.  It may sound obvious, but you should try at all times to avoid damaging your wooden floor by dragging furniture across it.  If you do need or want to move heavy objects, it will really pay off if you take the time to lift them and replace them gently in their new location.

2. Wherever possible try to put felt pads or felted castor cups under furniture wheels or on the base of furniture legs, both of which can be particularly harsh on wooden floors.  These felt pads or felted castor cups will really help protect your floor from damage.

3.  In order to avoid unnecessary damage and minimise wear and tear on your floor caused by everyday dirt and dust, make sure you have good quality doormats at each entry and exit.  These mats will help to remove damaging stones and dirt from shoes before they get the chance to cause problems.

4. Whenever possible try to soak up any spills at the first opportunity.  By wiping spills straight away, they won’t have the opportunity to soak into your floor causing unsightly stains and potential damage.

When it comes to maintaining your wooden floor, a good maintenance regime will not only help your floor finish last longer, it will help your whole floor look great and last for longer.

Here’s a few things we’d recommend you include in your regular wooden floor maintenance regime:

a. Regular sweeping with a soft brush or vacuuming to remove dust and dirt which, if left could cause long-lasting damage to your floor.

b. Cleaning your floor regularly with a barely damp mop (we find that microfibre mops work best on wooden floors).

c. Choosing your cleaning product carefully and only using cleaning products intended for use on wood, which will ensure that your floor is properly cleaned and cared for.  Look out for products which add lustre to your floor.
