If you’re planning a new wood floor, it’s only too easy to get wrapped up in the cost and choice of the floor itself and forget about the wood flooring installation costs.  When it comes to wood flooring installation costs, the prices you’ll be quoted will vary enormously as will the quality of fitting, so it’s not a decision you should take lightly.  Furthermore, it’s worth bearing in mind that a quality flooring installation will not only make your floor more aesthetically pleasing, it’ll help it last and last.

So, what do you need to think about when you’re trying to work out what your wood flooring installation costs might be?

To start with you’ll need to know if the floor you’ve chosen to install is solid wood or engineered wood.  When you’re looking at wood flooring installation costs, this is one of the first considerations you should take into account.  Solid wood flooring, as the name suggests is made from one single plank of wood whereas engineered wood flooring is made up of a thin layer of real wood on top of a plywood base.  This information is really important when working out your installation costs because each different type of flooring has its own ideal method of installation, which are priced differently.

The next thing to think about is whether your floor will be glued down or floating.  Glued down flooring is pretty self explanatory, and is particularly appropriate for engineered floors which are to be laid over underfloor heating.  Floating flooring on the other hand is the term used to describe a floor that isn’t fixed down to the sub floor, a floor that’s neither nailed nor glued down.  A floating floor relies purely on the weight of the floor to keep it in position.  Again, installation of this type of wood flooring has its own peculiarities which will impact on the price.

After that, you need to think about the sub floor.  Is your sub floor ready to have the new floor installed or will it need work to bring it up to scratch?  It may, for example need to have chip board installed before the flooring.  If so, this will of course affect the cost of fitting your new wood floor.

And finally, one of the most obvious elements which will affect your wood flooring installation costs is the size of your room.  Generally speaking, the larger the room, the longer it’ll take to install your wood floor, therefore it is reasonable to expect the price to be higher.  That said, oddly shaped or irregular rooms will also have an effect on the wood flooring installation costs you should budget for.
