Most Popular Wood Flooring 2017

It’s entirely normal when the nights start drawing in to look around your home and start to think about interiors projects that’ll make the long winter nights more comfortable and more appealing. Often this is the time of year when people start to think about their Christmas gathering and how they can make their home as welcoming and appealing to their guests as possible.

With this in mind, at Wood and Beyond we’ve been putting our heads together to look at what’s been happening in the wood flooring sector and what’s likely to prove to be the most popular wood flooring in 2017. So if you’ve got your sights on a forthcoming wood flooring project and you want to make sure your decision ties in with what’s likely to be ‘hot’ in 2017 read on.

Hot trends right now include: solid wood flooring; UV Oiled finishes; grey and white are particularly hot when it comes to colours, and chevron is at the front of the pack as are natural and select grades. In a bit of a horse-racing style of commentary, here’s what we suspect will prove to be the most popular wood flooring in 2017 …

Solid Wood Flooring should hold its own against engineered

Solid wood flooring was of course the first wood flooring solution to hit the market. Dating back centuries, it’s unlikely that this option will ever lose its appeal. Although engineered wood flooring has loads of advantages over solid wood, there are still some purists who insist on solid wood every time. And when you look at this range, you can see why! With prices, colours, finishes and grades to suit every pocket as well as every interior, you really will be spoilt for choice.

UV oiled finishes are likely to remain extremely popular

When wood flooring is UV oiled, not only do you get a truly natural looking finish but you get protection from the sun’s harmful rays to boot. Oiled finish wood flooring has remained a hugely popular option in 2016 and looks to continue to do so in 2017, thanks to its real appeal and natural look. A treatment that goes to the core of the wood, UV oiled wood flooring will stand up to pretty much anything life throws at it. And if it does get really tired looking over the years, you can always sand and re-finish it to bring it back to life.

Grey and white as colours should continue to draw a big following

Not so very long ago, to be ‘in vogue’ a black wood floor was called for. While black wood flooring is still really popular and definitely has its place in plenty of stylish interiors, many people have shifted for a subtler approach. Still in the black and white colour spectrum, grey and white wood flooring have both really made their mark this year. Seen by many as a more versatile option than black, you really can get creative with these colours, knowing that you’re unlikely to sicken of them when and if the trends change. Once again, we’d say these are a really safe bet for 2017.

Chevron came from nowhere but is likely to remain popular

Chevron flooring dates back centuries and when it first hit the interiors scene would have called for a real craftsman to laboriously cut and fit blocks of wood flooring one by one. Thankfully things have moved ahead nicely and you can now benefit from chevron style flooring without such painstaking precision. Our chevron engineered wood flooring solutions have been flying off the shelves in 2016 and we have no reason to believe that the trend won’t continue into 2017. A real style statement that will raise even the humblest of rooms to a new level, if you’re looking for something different that will stand the test of time, chevron is well worthy of consideration.

Natural and select grades will continue to come up trumps

As any regular reader of this blog will know, when wood is lumbered it is sorted by grade. Grades range from Prime at the top, through Select, Natural and Rustic at the bottom. While these grades don’t mean that the wood at the top is necessarily better than the wood at the bottom of the list, people do seem to be influenced by these grades. Why? In part, it is due to price. Price does tend to decrease from prime to rustic, so that is understandable. However, natural and select grades tend to win the hearts and minds of wood flooring lovers across the board. This is probably because they have a really nice character to them – they’re not too uniform and they’re not too heavily knotted either. So once again, if you’re looking for a grade that’s likely to be on trend in 2017, these are great contenders.
