No matter what sort of interior style you have in mind, deciding on the right flooring option is a major factor in the overall success of your project.  With such a broad range of wood flooring options available these days, you could be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed.  That said, even thought the checklist of options for making sure you get the right floor for your needs might seem enormous, you needn’t be overwhelming in any way.  The basic decisions that need to be made are; whether you should choose sold or engineered wood flooring; which species you should choose; which grade; which finish and which size of board.  Beyond that, all you really need to decide on is the pattern of the flooring.

Patterned wood flooring dates back centuries and featured strongly in grand houses and chateaux in the past.  What this means today is that patterned wood flooring has connotations of wealth and grandeur.  All of that said, patterned wood flooring sadly went out of fashion for a few decades.  In fact, a couple of decades ago many people ripped up original parquet flooring and took an axe to chevron floors when they inherited them in old houses, favouring carpet and laminate flooring.

However, like most things in fashion, these options have come strongly back into vogue in recent years and are once again, highly sought after.  This is why at Wood and Beyond we’ve worked our socks off to source a range of chevron patterned and herringbone patterned floors that really has something to offer everyone.

If you’re thinking of patterned wood flooring, here are some interior scenarios where it will work really well:

  1. Where you have a mid-sized room that you want to look bigger. In the same way that patterned clothing has a tendency to make our bodies look bigger, the same thing happens with patterned wood flooring.  Not a great idea in really small rooms because it has a tendency to ‘dwarf’ the room, placed in a mid-size room, chevron patterned wood flooring will give a real illusion of space because it creates the impression that the walls have been pushed out, making the room seem bigger.  This is a great way to use patterned wood flooring.
  2. Where you’re aiming to create a shabby chic look. Shabby chic has been around for a while now, but is still a charming and appealing interior option.  If you’re clever with your choices, this look will last a lifetime.  Washed out linens, oversized sofas and faded, chalky colour schemes are a clever way to make your room look as if it has been around for decades, when in fact you’ve only just created it.  As a backdrop to this look, a brushed and white oiled, patterned wood flooring gives a real edge and extra something.  Add into the mix a couple of off-white rugs or sheepskins and you’ll have the perfect solution.
  3. Where you want a room with class and charm. If you have a stock of old or antique furnishings, choosing the right floor can be a challenge.  The temptation is to opt for a dark, highly polished, narrow board, but there is arguably no better way to offset furnishings with a history than with a patterned wood floor.  In this particular setting a lacquered finish chevron pattern wood floor will work perfectly.
  4. Where you want to add interest to a long and boring hallway. When we design our homes, we often have great ideas for the main rooms but struggle when it comes to hallways and lobbies.  Hallways in particular can be a real challenge.  A space that we don’t spend too much time in, they often get ignored and left out.  If you have a long and narrow hallway, a patterned wood floor will add all the charm you need to bring the entrance to your home to life.  Again a lacquered finish will probably stand you in good stead here as well as a couple of good quality doormats!
  5. Where you want to add a twist to a highly modern room. If you’ve plumped for cutting edge design furniture and are tired of the simplicity of your look, then changing your floor to a patterned wood option will bring on a whole different impression.  A great way to add a twist in what may now seem like a cold, off the page look, you can add real personality to your room by introducing pattern to your floor.
