Engineered wood flooring is constructed in such a way that it’ll hardly bat an eyelid at the temperature and moisture fluctuations in most domestic kitchens. This is because it’s constructed in such a way that the boards simply can’t and don’t expand and contract to the same extent as solid wood. This means that you can fit an engineered wood floor in your kitchen and not worry about it developing gaps or cupping or bowing because of fluctuating temperature and moisture levels. This is great news.
The two most appropriate finishes or coatings for wood flooring in kitchens are oiled and lacquered. While each have their advantages and disadvantages, both will stand up to busy kitchen life well, and without showing too many signs of distress, no matter how busy your kitchen is. While lacquered is likely to be your preferred finish if you’re someone who’s prone to spills and splashes, if you like a really natural look and are quite proactive when it comes to mopping up little accidents, then an oiled finish is likely to appeal most.
