Dark Floorboards Suit Brighter Interiors the Best

When choosing new floorboards, one of the top items on most people’s agenda is the colour that’ll work best in their room. Often fearful of very light whites or very dark blacks people think that natural wood colour is their only option. When they think of this, they veer naturally towards mushroomy oak colours. And don’t get us wrong, we love mushroomy oak colours in the right setting. Against a colour palette of pastel pinks, blues and yellows or even whites and off-whites, there are few things to beat a mousy, mushroomy floor. But we also know that a bit of courage and imagination always pays off when it comes to choosing the right floor.

One of the scenarios that customers often struggle with is a bright interior. They worry that dark floorboards will look out of place or indeed will suffer because of the amount of sunlight. In fact, neither could be further from the truth, and what we often find is that dark floorboards suit brighter interiors the best of all.

When we’re on about dark, we’re not on about black here, instead we find that a dark brown is the perfect option. Creating an almost sepia toned, monochrome background, if you get your flooring right, your room will rise to a whole new level.

If you have an abundance of light in your room, we’d suggest you at least consider a stylish mix of dark floorboards, lighter walls and light furnishing. The contrast that this combination offers truly is stunning.

We recently fitted dark floorboards in a room that was completely washed with light thanks to huge floor to ceiling windows. The owner then finished the room with light grey walls, off-white furnishing and a few touches of washed out linen in pastel shades. It was almost as if someone had created the perfect nest for relaxing, spending time with friends and even quiet solitude. The end result was stylish, confident and classy.

So how can you make sure you get this look right?

The first thing to do is choose the depth of darkness you want. You needn’t go for too dark a colour if you find the notion scary. At Wood and Beyond, we have a range of traditional dark wood options that you can find amongst this selection. There are also a number of our grey floors which are quite dark, like a few of the floors in the London Grey range and a couple in the Sahara Grey range.

When you choose any of these floors you don’t only get the great look of dark floorboards to take your bright room to a new level, but you also get the peace of mind of knowing that the finish on the boards comes with the benefit of a UV filter. If you’re not familiar with UV filters for floors, don’t worry. It’s not complicated. UV flooring filters work a bit like sunscreen and protects your floor against the harmful effects of the sun. What this means is that no matter how bright your room is, your floor will be protected against fading and discolouration.

Whether you choose one of the options we’ve showcased above or if you make a different choice, the one thing we’d really encourage you to do is to make sure your choice has a UV filter. Otherwise you could find yourself frustrated in the months and years to come with a patchy floor.

If you’re on the lookout for unusual or interesting ways to floor your room, please take the time to reach out. At Wood and Beyond we have a great combination of technical and creative knowledge and experience and will put everything it takes into making sure you get the right floor for your project every time.
