Black Flooring: What Are Your Options?

Black flooring is a highly desirable and stylish flooring option.  Lending itself both to modern and minimalist, designer interiors as well as interiors that abound with antiques, black flooring is highly desired right now.  If you’re planning a black floor in your home, there are lots of things to consider, but one of the fundamental questions you’re likely to be facing is the material you’ll choose for your new installation.

When it comes to choosing which black flooring option will suit you best, there are lots of things to consider.  For example, you need to think about the room you’re re-flooring; the people who’ll use it; how many people will use it; what they’ll use it for and what sort of maintenance level you’re prepared to put up with.  For example, if you’ve decided that you’re looking for black flooring for a small kitchen in an apartment where you live alone, it may well be that vinyl will be the perfect option.  Alternatively, if you’re seeking to re-floor your dining room that sits on the first floor of your (rather large) ‘upside down’ (bedrooms on the ground floor and living quarters on the first floor), state of the art abode, then you’re much more likely to opt for a wood solution.  But, like everything in life, there are half way houses and here’s what we think the various options are, and what they’re best suited to.

Black carpet

There’s no getting away from the fact that carpet has become somewhat passé over the past few years as a floor covering.  That said, it still has its place in certain interior settings.  Particularly appealing if you live alone, or as a couple without kids, black carpet can be both sumptuous, sensual and cosy at the same time, especially in a bedroom or a lounge setting.  All of that said, keeping a black carpet looking great can end up a full-time job, even in a relatively low foot-fall household.  You only need to think about that lovely black cashmere jumper you adore to get the notion here; every speck of dust, every hair and every thread stands out like a sore thumb against it.  Even dark coloured ‘foreign bodies’ stand out on a black carpet, so, unless you’re a really relaxed being, or you love vacuuming, perhaps this isn’t the option for you.

Black tiles

Black tiles are a stunning way of flooring a kitchen, hallway, bathroom, shower or utility room and the choice of black tiles on the market today is extensive to say the least.  No matter whether you want a natural looking slate or stone, or a highly polished marble or gloss tile, a black tile option can work really well.  A really practical flooring solution, even if you have a host of kids and a handful of pets coming in and out of your home, a black tile floor shouldn’t cause you excessive maintenance issues.

Black vinyl

Much like black tiling, black vinyl can be a really effective and attractive black flooring solution.  Lending itself more to kitchen, bathroom, shower or utility room setting, vinyl needn’t look like a budget option (and in some cases won’t be!).  With vinyls ranging from just a few pounds per square meter, up to tens of pounds per square meter, there really is a broad and varied choice.  The secret here is to make sure you buy the best your budget will allow and have it really well fitted.  In particular, try to make sure there are no joins and that the edges are either taken up the walls to create a designer, almost skirting board finish or they’re at least taken under your existing skirting boards.  Although vinyls can be cheap, you get what you pay for and you should expect to replace a cheap vinyl option every couple of years, whereas most of the other options covered in this article will be much longer wearing.

Black solid wood

Solid wood flooring is a great option for black (or almost black) flooring that will both be easy maintenance, easy on the eye and will stand the test of time.  Solid wood flooring is perfect for any room in the home where there aren’t significant temperature or moisture fluctuations, or where you don’t have under floor heating.  Made from solid planks of one type of wood, the likes of this Rustic Solid Oak Flooring, isn’t quite black but it’s not far off.  This flooring would set off any bedroom, lounge, dining room or hallway to a tee.

Black Engineered wood

Engineered wood flooring is a really versatile flooring option that is ideal in any room of the home.  Unlike solid wood flooring, it can also be fitted in rooms where there are temperature and moisture fluctuations as well as in rooms where you have under floor heating (but only certain thicknesses are suitable, so always check the manufacturers recommendations).  Here are some black options that would look great and cover every budget range.

So there you have it; a real whistle-stop tour around the black flooring options that you might want to consider for your project.  If you’d like more advice on any of the wood flooring options we’ve mentioned in this article, don’t hesitate to get in touch.  We have a team of experts ready to take your call.
