Basket Weave Wood Flooring

Basket weave wood flooring has been a popular wood flooring option for decades.  A highly attractive alternative to straight wood flooring planks, it was out of vogue for a while but has now come back into interior focus with a vengeance.  Essentially produced using interweaving wood panels so they look like one ‘weaves’ under another, this way of creating wood flooring was done by hand when it first appeared.  Thankfully things have progressed and this unique, classy way of laying out a wood floor can be done much more easily today.

Does it suit all types of room?

Traditionally found in grand buildings and chateaux around Europe and particularly in France, basket weave, or interwoven wood flooring is commonly associated with wealth and luxury and so exudes a real feeling of quality and charm in your home.

Like most interior design concepts, basket weave flooring isn’t suited to every room in the home.  In fact, used in big, cavernous rooms, it can make the room feel even bigger, which isn’t necessarily what most people want.  Equally, used in very small rooms, it can exacerbate the smallness of the room, which isn’t idea either.  As a result, there are two ideal settings for basket weave wood flooring and they are; mid-size rooms where you want to create a greater feeling of space, and long, narrow rooms.

If you have a mid-sized room in your house that is smaller than you’d like it to be, plumping for basket weave flooring will give it an illusion of grandeur and space.  The reason for this is that the flooring effectively creates an optical illusion, pushing the walls out and making the room seem bigger.  Equally this option will create interest in a long, narrow room, such as a hallway.

How can you achieve a basket weave look?

There are two ways of achieving a basket weave or interwoven look for your floor.  The first is that you seek out a highly skilled and experienced joiner or wood worker and let them create the basket weave look for you by hand.  As you can imagine, while the end result of this option would undoubtedly be a real charm, the cost of this way of working is outside the budget of most people.  As a result, the easiest and most convenient way to achieve this look in your own home is to buy ready constructed wood boards.

At Wood and Beyond, we have a range of Chevron wood flooring that enables you to achieve the basket weave look in your home in a fraction of the time it would take to construct such a design and at a much more affordable price.  We believe that this range of interwoven flooring brings basket weave flooring within your reach at a great price.  With a range of finishes from UV lacquered to brushed and white oiled, there’s an option that will suit most interiors.  Add to this, the fact that these floors come in different lengths of board to enable you to plan your project perfectly, and you’ll soon see why this flooring option is so popular.

Solid or engineered?

Like most flooring options, whether you opt for solid or engineered wood flooring will depend on the conditions in the room where you plan to lay the floor as well as whether or not you have under floor heating.  All of that said, to achieve a pre-made basket weave or interwoven look floor, an engineered wood board is the perfect solution.  Irrespective of your room conditions or whether or not you have under floor heating, an engineered wood flooring board with a chevron or basket weave pattern will allow you to achieve a real wood look quickly and effectively.

The major advantage that any engineered wood flooring solution has over solid wood is that the core board is made of a solid construction of layers and layers of ply that are glued together to make a really strong foundation.  Thereafter the interwoven solid wood surface that’s applied to the core makes this solution as attractive and as appealing as real wood, without any of the downsides.
