What is engineered wood flooring?

Engineered Hardwood Flooring is a product made up of a core of hardwood, plywood or HDF and a top layer of hardwood veneer that is glued on the top surface of the core and is available in almost any hardwood species. The product thus has the natural characteristics of the selected wood species as opposed to a photographic layer of laminate floors. The engineered product has been designed to provide greater stability, particularly where moisture or heat pose problems for Solid Hardwood Floors. Engineered floors are installed by the floating method either by a click system or by gluing the tongue and grove together. This makes it ideal if you are looking to install a real wood floor over a concrete base as the installation is much easier.

I have under floor heating, can I install an engineered floor?

Yes , as long as you follow a few special requirements: The floor construction must have a heat distribution layer that provides a very even temperature over the entire floor area, in order to avoid localized excessively high temperatures. The whole floor area must be heated. It must be possible to control and limit the surface temperature with great accuracy. The surface temperature of the finished floor must never exceed 27 degree C at any point. A vapor barrier must be built into the floor construction, as close to the wood floor as possible. If the joists are thick or heavy, it is particularly important that the vapor barrier is close to the wood floor. The vapor barrier must never be underneath the joist structure. Ensure that there are no air gaps between the wood floor and the surface beneath, as this could cause the wood to dry out. The working temperature when laying should be at least 18 degree C. This applies to boards, subfloor and the room air temperature. Relative humidity (RH) of the air must be less than 60% before, during and after laying the floor. Please Note: The above points are basic rules of installing engineered flooring over under floor heating. You should always check and follow the heating manufactures guide lines.

Do I need to leave an expansion gap with engineered floors?

Yes, as with all wood and laminate flooring you will need to leave an expansion gap. This applies for anywhere the floor meets a fixed object (wall, door ways, pipes, etc.) You will need to allow for 1.5mm for every linear meter in length and width ensuring a minimum of 15mm at all times.

Do I need to have an expansion gap between rooms?

Yes it is recommended to leave expansion gaps in doorways between rooms. This expansion gap can be covered by door profiles but a 15mm expansion should be allowed under the profile for both sides of the room. This expansion gap relieves uneven stresses that can be caused by the differential movement in different rooms.

How do I measure my flooring?

Hardwood flooring space is measured in units of M2. M2 also known as square metre is calculated by multiplying the two widest parts of the room. For example 4.5M X 6.5M will total 29.25M2. There are other types of room shapes where the calculation might vary slightly and for those rooms we recommend you read our How To Measure Your Floor Space guide.

How does price work for flooring?

Some hardwood flooring sellers offer pricing in units of M2 and some base their pricing on packs. The math is simple. If the pricing is based on M2, simply divide your total required M2 by the sellers price per M2. If the pricing is based on packs, divide your total required M2 by the M2 which each pack contains. There are also other variables which might influence wood flooring prices such as the flooring finish and wood species.
