A Guide To Hardwood Flooring Finishes

Hardwood floors are divided into two main groups, solid floors (also known as real hardwood floors) and engineered floors (also known as semi-solid floors). Each type of floor has different characteristics to it and you can read about the differences between the two in our guide 'Solid Or Engineered Hardwood Flooring'. In this guide however, you will find useful information about the different surface finish hardwood floors are available at. In most cases, the floor finish has a functional role as well as a visual goal as it is meant to give the floor a layer of protection from dirt to sunlight and heavy wear and tear.

Different finishes can vary from one seller to the other so use this guide as a reference to what is available in the market. Before buying a wooden floor, look at the species of wood, but also at the type of finish the floor comes in.

A Guide To Hardwood Flooring Finishes:

Lacquered Finish - This type of finish gives the wood floor an extra strong smooth protective coating and the emphasis is on creating a smoother glossy surface. Lacquered finish is designed for flooring areas where there is little sunshine.

UV Lacquered Finish - This type of finish gives the wood floor an extra strong smooth protective coating and the emphasis is on creating a smoother matt surface. UV lacquered finish is a very popular finish which gives the floor a stunning visual look that will transform any room. UV is designed for places where there is a lot of sunshine, and the finish is matt.

Oiled Finish - Oiled finish affect gives the floor an extra strong natural wooden look and strong protective coating. As with all flooring oils, it is aimed at helping keep the natural feel and texture of the wood. Oiled finish is very popular for those who wish to keep a natural look, but also protect the wood.

Oiled and Brushed Finish - Similar to the above finish, the floor is coated in a protective coating, but has an extra rural look to it as the brushed affect creates a naturally textured surface that gently highlights the natural grain structure. Oiled and brushed finish is very popular for those who wish to keep a natural look, but also protect the wood.

Thermo Treated, Brushed & Oiled Finish - The Thermo Treated technique allows the floor to reach a very dark color, almost black (very similar to Wenge). Thermo treated finish is popular with those who are after a strong dark color floor within a competitive budget.
