The grit and dirt which collects on the soles of people's shoes can do significant damage to oak hardwood flooring over a period of time.
According to the doityourself blog, this is one of four major threats that a wooden floor can face, with the others being excessive amounts of sunlight, incorrect cleaners and brushless vacuums.
To prevent stones and other materials from scratching oak hardwood flooring, parents should insist that kids remove their footwear before stepping onto the oak flooring.
"When you come in the house, take your shoes off to avoid scratching the flooring surface with anything you might have stuck in the soles of your shoes. You should also invest in mats to put outside any external entrances," the blog suggested.
Stanley Rous, from Maid for Mommy, said in an article for Niche Volumes that people should always check with a professional as to whether their hardwood floor needs to be buffed or polished before proceeding with any work.
